Park Güell totally reopen again!

Good news!

After a few months of works to repair the damage left by the wind after a storm last winter, the upper part of the Park Güell is reopen again!

Visitors didn't miss that much, since the most exciting part of the site wasn't affected by the fallen trees, but it's great to know you can walk freely again in the forrest area of the park and enjoy the views from the stone bridges.

I missed saying hi to my good friend, the Carob Tree that leaves beneath one of them!

Copa, Lliga i Champions!

If you are in Barcelona today, everywhere you go you'll hear people singing the Queen's "We we'll rock you" tune with some Catalan words. What is it all about? They are singing: "Copa, Lliga i Champions", and that is because last night our Barcelona soccer team (often known as Barça) won the third big trophy of the year. First was the Spanish King's Cup, then the Spanish League, and now... the European Champions League! If you also add the fact that we scored 6 goals against the ever-rival Real Madrid... That is their Big Year!

Last night they defeated the Manchester United in Rome, and the celebration in town (and everywhere else!) lasted the whole night long. And today the team paraded accross the city so the locals could celebrate with them.

I'm not a soccer fan, but today I got to the accademy where I take evening dance lessons to see that... the parade was scheduled to pass right in front of it!!! There was already a crowd waiting for them, and by the time my lesson was over and I got back to the street, the team hadn't got there yet so I decided to stay. The place is not too close from the very center, so instead of crazy fans there were lots of happy teenagers and parents with their kids sporting the Barça t-shirts. It took me an hour wait, but in the end I got you a few pictures. Sorry if they are a bit blurry, I only had my cellphone with me and the quality isn't that good. And with the emotion, it was hard to keep the hand steady!!!!

Visca el Barça!

Gaudí's Pedrera opens to prehistorical guests

The basement of Gaudí's appartment building La Pedrera (nickname for the also known as Casa Milà) is usually closed to the public except for a few private events and just from time to time, special exhibits.

Now is one of the unique ocasions to visit this area that otherwise you'd see only in plaster models in their Espai Gaudí at the attic of the building: the Atapuerca prehistorical discoverings (considered World Heritage by UNESCO) will be on show there until June 28th.

I reccomend you check it out even if you aren't that interested in archeological remains. Gaudí showed off in this space his engineering proficiency by playing with the weights of the building and distributing them radially to create a room with no columns in the middle.

And the Atapuerca fossiles are also really worth! The most ancient human remains in Europe where found there, as well as the best preserved fossile face in the world ("Skull 5") and the most complete pelvis bone (funnily nicknamed... Elvis!). A fascinating trip to the life back to 500,000 years ago!

Plus the entrance is free!

Marta on Jamie's Magazine!

As I had announced last February in this blog, I gave a few tapas tours to two journalists from the Jamie Magazine, by the famous British chef Jamie Oliver.

The number with their story has just been released, and they mention me. I'm even in one of the pics!

Congratulations to Paul Dring, journalist, and William Meppem, photographer, for their beautiful story!

The natural landscape around Montserrat in danger!

Private corporations are planning to build a huge industrial area in Collbató, a countryside village at the food of the Montserrat Mountain. That would destroy forever the beautiful natural landscape around it where vineyards, olive and almond trees grow.

You can help stopping it by signing in in the Save Montserrat website or making a donation. More than 76,000 people have already joined!

Ernie, Tina and John cruise around the world... and they stopped in Barcelona!

Ernie, Tina and John Euler have been cruising around the world in the Royal Princess for more than 3 months. Barcelona was one of their stops towards the end of such a life-changing trip, and they contacted me to organize a tour for them and some of their travel mates.

We decided on going to Montserrat, and then back to Barcelona for lunch and some more touring. The ship stop wasn't very long, so our time was tight but we finally made it and everyone said they'll be back to enjoy the city with more time.

You can read their post and see their pictures in their outstanding trip journal.

"We have been extremely touched by your tour", say the Dufour

The Dufour family visited Barcelona in mid-April and I gave them a Gaudí tour in private minivan and also a walking tour of the Old Town. Here is the email I just received from them:

"Subject: We have been extremely touched by your tour.

Marta,
We the Dufour Family from Montreal, Québec, have had a marvelous tourist guide in particular Gaudi's Architectural Mystical revelation in Stone.

Richard, Marcelle, Alain, Evelyn, Fernando could not imagine a Tourist Guide to be so professional, scholarly, classy, as you.

Our Barcelona visit was indeed blessed by your very high professional standard. It was the High Peak of our trip, and certainly in our Life Time."

Fernando Dufour is a Chemistry Professor, that has developed a 2D Periodic Table called 3D ElemenTree. You can learn more about him and his project in this link.

I'm so very flattered about their letter. To me it was also a pleasure showing this charming family Barcelona.

Barcelona sounds

Sons de Barcelona is a local project related to the international FreeSound community, where people capture the sounds they believe to be representative of different areas of the city and post them online in a city map.

I loved the idea and wanted to share it with you. Some of my favorites where the wind blowing at the beach and the sea waves, the rain at the Palace of Justice, a bird singing, a creaky balcony door, the announcement of the next stop in a RENFE train, the "heartbeat-like" sound of cars passing a bridge, the Encants de Bellcaire flee market and the sellers shouting their "barato" (cheap) merchandise, a tapas bar, the celebration of a victory of the Barça football team, the bells of a neighbourhood church, dry leaves blown by the wind, someone running over pebbles...

There are even sounds related to our tourist sites, such as the electronic carillion of the Sagrada Familia church, organ playing and the ecos inside a church, the athmosphere at Plaça Catalunya, the birds market in La Rambla, the Boqueria Market, tourist at the Park Güell...

The Born in flames

Last Sunday, the local artist Muma organized a performance in the streets of the Born Quarter in Barcelona, inviting everyone to lit up candles forming wavy patterns in the twilight. He has done this kind of event in other European cities. In Barcelona, he choose the district that was beside the port in the Middle Ages, that's why he called this activity "Encenguem la mar" (Let's lit up the sea).

Although it rain through the first part of the event, the volonteers kept lighting up the candles and when night fell, the whole neighbourhood was imbued of the magical fairy and peaceful spirit of fire. I was there with some friends participating in the event.

I apologize about the delay, but there is so much work (tours and office work) that a week has passed before I managed to get the pics ready...
