I took a course on the Catalan Way of Saint James
Low season is a time to keep training and learning new things that can be interesting for me and my clients, so Monday and Tuesday I attended a workshop organized by the Tourism Department of the Catalan Government.
In the middle ages, pilgrims used to cross Europe to reach Spain and visit the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the Apostle Saint James is supposed to be buried. Now the traditional paths pilgrims used to get there have become a very popular holyday experience that mixes religion, with hiking/biking/horse riding, enjoying nature and gorgeous landscape, getting to know first-hand the local lifestyle, and discovering valuable architectural and artistic heritage.
Although the Catalan ways to Santiago aren't as famous as the two northern ones, pilgrims have also traditionally crossed our region on their way there, and now the Tourism Department has collaborated with different specialists to promote them. Guidebooks are being issued, the paths have been marked, and they are working to get more and more services open for pilgrims along their routes. Althought it definitely isn't as fully equipped as the traditional paths are, our ways are a great option for those who have already done the others and are looking for something new, and it's also way less crowded that any other other option.
As for me, although obviously not many pilgrims are likely to use tourguide services, I thought the worshop was very interesting and I learnt a lot about the routes and what you find along the way. I now actually feel like exploring pieces of it with my boyfriend some weekend!
In the picture, you see me with Carme Marsal, co-author of the guidebooks issued by the Tourism Department, who gave 3 of the workshop's lectures.

Whales spotting in Catalonia? Now it's possible!
I used to think that if I wanted to see whales and other cetaceans I should go far away. But now it's possible to do it also here in the Mediterranean, near Barcelona! From March to November whales, dolphins and other sea mammals travel along our coastline in their way to Liguria (Italy), and the Bufalvent Association is making a research on them and allow people to join their one-day sails to catch sight of them.
Their website is only in Catalan by now, but you can probably find some good online website translator if you are interested in reading it.
They depart at 8am from l'Estartit and return at noon. The trip includes the boat and sailors for a group of 15 people (if it's less people other ships are available as well), Catalan breakfast with tomato bread and sausages, a class on cetaceans and educational material.
Their 2009 price is 98 euro for adults and 75 for kids upto 12yo.
They can't guarrantee you'll see whales as it just depends on the animals and your good luck, of course! But you'll learn a lot and will enjoy a great morning sailing and enjoying the magnificent views of the Empordà coast.
I can organize it for you and your family if you are in Barcelona. For 790 euro (sailing fees not included) we'll get to L'Estartit in a private minivan with driver, where you'll be able to join the whale spotting trip. We'll return to Barcelona afterwards, or for an extra 90 euro we'll extend the trip 2h for some beach time, a local lunch or visiting some cute pitturesque Empordà village.

New!!! Excursions to the Monkey Foundation!
The Fundació Mona (or Monkey Foundation) was set up to end the exploitation of primates in captivity. They have established a sanctuary near Girona in Spain, which provides a home where rescued chimpanzees and other primates can live in a natural environment and where people can be inspired to understand and respect wild animals.
Their center is opened for visits from Wednesday to Sunday, and now I'll be offering excursions to their facilities, where you can watch families of chimps exploring the towers, ropeways and natural landscape of their spacious new home. Mona Foundation volunteers are always on hand to explain the story of the rescue of the chimps and answer questions about the protection of primates in the wild.
After the visit, we'll head for lunch to Girona or Tossa de Mar, where we'll also get some light sightseeing.
